Furnaces & Boilers:

The Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE), a measure of overall energy performance,
rates the efficiency of new furnaces and boilers. Since 1992 it is required that each new unit
have an AFUE of at least 78%. In comparison, many old furnaces and boilers have AFUE
ratings of only 55 – 65%, and often perform at lower levels due to age or maintenance issues.
When buying a new furnace, make sure its heating capacity is appropriate for your home.
Furnaces operate less efficiently because they cycle on and off more frequently. South Side Plumbing & Heating can do a heat loss analysis of your home and size a furnace that is right for your home.

Heat Pumps: “Split System” Air Conditioners

A heat pump keeps your home cool in the summer by drawing heat out of your home, and warm in the winter by drawing heat from the outside air into your home to heat it. A heat pump’s cooling efficiency is rated in SEER (SEASONAL ENERGY EFFICIENCY RATIO). Heating efficiency is rated in HSPF (HEATING SYSTEM PERFORMANCE FACTOR), the higher the number, 5, 6 or 7, the more efficient the unit.

Hot Water Tanks
Tankless Hot Water Heaters

Most homes use either gas or electric hot water heaters. Gas hot water heaters can be either propane or natural gas, draft vented or power-assisted venting. Recently, tankless hot water heaters have grown in popularity. At South Side Plumbing, we service and sell them all.

Traditional Hot Water Tanks

When you’re looking for a new water heater, keep in mind that the money you spend now may well be an investment that pays off in the long run. More expensive water heaters are often less costly to run than cheaper water heaters. To make a good investment, you’ll want to consider both the initial sticker price and the long-term costs of running your heater.

Electric water heaters operate more efficiently, but gas water heaters often cost less to operate because natural gas is relatively inexpensive. If you have a gas water heater, you should install a carbon monoxide detector and have all of your gas appliances inspected periodically for safety's sake.

Tank-type water heaters have a hot water storage tank where heated water is stored and available for use at any time. When hot water is drawn from the tank, it is replaced by cooler water that must be heated before use. It takes some time for the water in the tank to reach its thermostatically set temperature.

A two-person household typically requires a 40 to 60 gallon water heater, while a five-person household may require a 60 to 80 gallon water heater to accommodate peak usage requirements. If you have a large family or a whirlpool tub, consider buying a model with a larger tank, even though it may cost slightly more to operate.

Important: Hot Water Tanks should be flushed out annually to remove any sediment buildup.

Tankless Water Heaters - How does this Heating system work? What are the benefits?

Installation ServicesTankless Water Heaters are designed to heat water as you need it, which means that everyone in your family will be able to use hot water anytime on demand. How is this possible? Well, whenever somebody turns on the hot water faucet, the tankless water heater springs into action. Cold water flows into the heater and is instantly heated by copper and brass water ways known as exchangers.

The result is endless hot water in a matter of seconds! The hot water temperature is set by you and will always remain the same, which should eliminate any incidences of burns or scalding water. When the members of your family are finished using the hot water, the tankless water heater will shut down until it is needed again.

These systems are far more efficient than standard storage tank water heaters. Tankless Water heaters also last longer than storage tank water heaters. Aside from being more space effective (most units are a quarter of the size of conventional heaters), tankless water heaters also provide unobstructed heat transfer. Water is not actually stored in a tankless heater and mineral build-up does not occur enabling it to perform at the highest level for upwards of 20 years or more.
